Caractère d'usage extrêmement fréquent, dont la très large diffusion a été étudiée par Riccardo Olocco, qui en a localisé la première occurence chez Ottaviano Scoto en 1481, et en a tracé l'utilisation sous les presse de plus d'une centaine d'imprimeurs italiens et étrangers (chez Josse Bade à Paris ou Johann Froben à Bâle, par exemple).
